RABOBANK - KEY ROLE IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY CHALLENGE
Rabobank firmly believes that companies can improve their position and profitability by operating more circularly. Circular enterprise spurs companies to come up with new ideas for the market and their business processes. It also makes them less dependent on raw materials and enables them to produce less waste. Rabobank supports companies in making this transformation. Not by providing technical knowledge on the production of car mats or tomatoes, but rather by providing access to knowledge about the circular business model, connecting network partners and offering financial solutions. For example, lease is a form of financing that is particularly well-suited to the use of goods, rather than their ownership.
A nationwide initiative in the Netherlands in which Rabobank plays a key role in the Circular Economy Challenge. This project took place in 2014 and 2015 and entailed eight large companies in the automotive and food sectors rising to the challenge of turning their ideas for circular enterprise into business opportunities. This yielded valuable insights into the related technical, commercial and financial opportunities and obstacles. After the completion of the nationwide project in the autumn of 2015, local Rabobanks launched the regional Circular Economy Challenges. Forty local Rabobanks are currently exploring the opportunities for circular enterprise in their regions. This has resulted in regional Circular Economy Challenges across the Netherlands. Ten local companies are participating in each regional challenge. The Dutch regions currently conducting these challenges include the Greater Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, the rural ‘Green Heart’ region (surrounded by Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht), and the Zwolle region.
